Of the 34 invoiced jobs listed on this site, 13 were spring repairs on a door already in place: 12 on extension springs and one on torsion springs. Another seven were new-door installs, which came with new springs; they are listed separately below and left out of those counts.

How springs work

Torsion, extension, and what wears a spring out

Torsion or extension: which one is on your door

Look at the wall above the closed door. A torsion door has a steel shaft running across the width of the door, with one or two tightly wound springs on it and a cable drum at each end. The springs twist as the door closes and turn the shaft to lift it.

An extension door has no shaft. Its springs run alongside the horizontal tracks above your head and stretch as the door closes. Each one should have a safety cable running through its middle, so a spring that snaps stays on the cable instead of flying loose.

In our job records, 12 of the 13 spring repairs with a recorded type were on extension springs, and all seven new-door jobs went in with torsion springs.

What wears a spring out

Springs are rated in cycles: one cycle is the door opening and closing once. How many cycles a spring actually lasts depends on how it was handled, installed and used.

DASMA, the door and opener manufacturers' association, lists what shortens that life after a spring leaves the factory: rust, which thins the wire and weakens it; a spring that does not match the door's weight; weight added to the door later, paint included; a door left open for long stretches in heat, cold or wet weather; and springs that are not lubricated as the door maker's instructions say.

If a spring just broke

The door is closed
Leave it closed and stop using the opener. The springs carry the weight of the door; without them the opener strains against a load it was not built to lift.
The door is stuck open, or a car is trapped
Keep people, pets and cars out from under the door. Do not pull the red release cord and do not try to lift it: with a broken spring, a released door can drop.
Whatever position it is in
Leave the spring hardware alone. Do not loosen brackets, cables or set screws, and do not try to unwind a spring.

How much does spring replacement cost?

Torsion spring replacement runs $325-$750 total, parts and labor included. Where you land in that range depends on your door's weight and the spring wire gauge required. Heavier insulated double-car doors need higher-cycle springs and sit at the upper end; a light single-car door lands at the low end. We confirm the exact total on site before any work starts and almost always recommend replacing both springs together when one breaks. The other is usually close behind.

Why is DIY spring replacement dangerous?

Torsion springs store enough rotational energy to break bones, blind you, or worse if released uncontrolled. We wind and release them with proper winding bars and tension measurement, and the whole job is usually 1-2 hours.

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?

Most obvious signs: loud bang from the garage (often at night when temperatures drop), the door won't open or feels extremely heavy, a visible 2-inch gap in the spring coil, the opener motor strains and stops, or the door opens 6 inches and halts. Don't try to force it. Call us.

Should I replace both springs at once?

Yes, almost always. If one spring snapped, the other has been through the same number of cycles and is usually close to failing too. Doing both during one visit saves you a second service call.
