Safety

No photo eyes near the floor? Check how old the opener is

The 1993 federal rule

Every residential garage door opener made for sale in the US since January 1, 1993 has to meet a federal safety standard, 16 CFR Part 1211. It must reverse when the closing door meets an obstruction, and it needs a second safety system on top of that: a pair of photo eyes near the floor at the bottom of the tracks, an edge sensor on the door, or a wall button you have to hold down the whole time the door closes.

If your opener has none of those, it was made before the rule or its safety devices have been taken off. Either way it does not protect anyone in the doorway. Any opener sold new has to meet the standard, including the three in the table above.

Choosing

Before you pick one

Noise near a living space
Compare the belt drive, and ask whether worn rollers are adding to the noise; roller replacement is a separate, smaller job.
You want the ceiling clear
The wall-mount opener works only with torsion springs, so check which springs the door has first. How to tell.
Phone control or battery backup
Check which features come with the exact model; the table lists them for all three.
The old opener works but struggles
Check the door before the opener. A door that is hard to lift by hand has a spring problem, and a stronger opener will not fix it: see spring replacement.

Can you install a smart Wi-Fi opener?

Yes. LiftMaster Wi-Fi openers work with the myQ app, so you can open, close and check the door from your phone, and some models have a built-in camera. Setup includes connecting the opener to your Wi-Fi and pairing the app on your phone.

How long do garage door openers last?

It depends on the model, how often the door runs and whether the door itself is balanced: a heavy, out-of-balance door wears an opener out faster. A worn drive gear or a failed capacitor is a repair, not a new opener: opener repair runs $195-$450, against $574-$1,229 for a new one installed. Lifespans by drive type are at tips/opener lifespan.
