Before you call

Garage door won't open? Do this first.

Check these first

  1. The opener is plugged in, and no breaker or garage GFCI outlet has tripped (press the reset button on the GFCI).
  2. The manual slide lock on the inside of the door is not engaged. If the lock bar is in the track, the opener cannot move the door.
  3. Nothing blocks the two photo-eye sensors near the floor. Both lights should be steady; a blinking light means the beam is blocked.
  4. Try the wall button. If the wall button works and the remote does not, it is the remote battery.
  5. If the motor runs but the door does not move and the red cord was pulled, push the trolley toward the door until it clicks back onto the carriage.

Do not

  • Keep pressing the button. If the opener tried and failed, it only grinds the gears and burns out the motor.
  • Pull the red release with the door partly open when a spring may be broken. Nothing will hold the door up.
  • Lift a door that feels like 100 lbs or more. That is a broken spring: stop.
  • Force a door that is crooked or off its track, or touch the springs, cables or bottom brackets. They are under spring tension.
  • If someone is hurt or pinned by the door, call 911 first.

Car trapped, or door stuck open

  • Car trapped: make sure the door is fully closed, pull the red cord down and toward the opener, then lift the door by hand. About 10-15 lbs means the opener is the problem, so prop the door and drive out. 100 lbs or more means a spring: stop and call.
  • Once released, the door is fully manual and anyone can lift it from outside, so do not leave it open and unattended.
  • Stuck open: do not force it closed by hand or with the opener. Park a car across the opening or stay home until the visit, and say it is stuck open when you call.

My spring broke or my car is trapped. What should I do right now?

Don't keep pressing the opener button and don't force the door. If you need the car out, first make sure the door is fully closed, then pull the red emergency release cord down and toward the opener and lift the door by hand. If it feels normal (10-15 lbs), the problem is the opener. If it is extremely heavy (100+ lbs), a spring is broken: stop and call. Never pull the release while the door is partly open with a broken spring, because nothing will hold it up. Never try to repair a spring yourself, and once the door is released, don't leave it open and unattended.

Do you carry parts for an emergency repair?

Yes for the common failures: springs, cables, rollers, sensors and opener parts are on the truck. A replacement door panel may have to be ordered from the manufacturer (1-5 days).

What counts as a garage door emergency?

A noisy door or a slow opener can wait for a scheduled visit, which has no trip fee.
